Eg 1 Mattafix - Big City Life

Act: Mattafix
Track: Big City Life
Year: 2005
Director: Scott Franklin
Genre: Hip Hop
Main Audience: 13-18 year olds (mainly teenagers)

Video:

Relationships between visuals + Lyrics:

The video for Mattafix - Big City Life, tells a story through the use of the visuals on screen and the lyrics been used. The idea of telling a story through the use of imagery and lyrics helps draw the audience in and engages them into the song as it is more interesting and the audience has a understanding of what the lyrics mean.

Performance, Narrative + Concept:

There is a clear narrative in this music video. The main character is portrayed as a poor man who works his way through life, living in the city and his life progressively becoming better. The footage shows how he progressively turns his life around through the help of others.

Performance Style:

In this video there is no dancing at all, the performer himself is taking part walking around in character as a everyday person. Camera is doesn't focus on him all throughout. The footage is shot around various places in the city and follows the story of a poor man. The narrative is engaging and draws the audience to engage as it shows how life can become gradually better no matter what background you come from.

Pace:

The pace for this video isn't very quick as the lyrics that are been sung are telling a story and is fitting with the visuals. It remains like this throughout the duration of the song.

Location + Mise-en-scene:

The location for this video starts of in the back streets of the city and as the song progresses the location becomes visually more appealing and pleasant. The use of mise-en-scene in this video is very vital as it helps add effect to the lyrics been sung and makes creates a sense of verisimilitude. The choice of setting and mise-en-scene used in this video helps engage the audience and makes them feel sorry for the poor man.

My Track Choice: Twisted Sister - I wanna rock

The track that I chose from the track list I was given was 'I wanna rock' by Twisted Sister. the reason that i chose this track was because it had a great original video that was produced with the actual song, because of the actual video this gave me inspiration to make a remake of the video but make it more comical. I felt that it would be a simple video to film as it doesn't require many actors/actresses and that we could use school as the location as this would be easily accessible , this would also use a form of intertextuality from the original video. It would also be extremely fun to video as people would enjoy dressing up and having some fun.

The Tracks I Got to Pick From

Listed below are the tracks that i was given to choose from:

  1. Bon Jovi - You Give Love a Bad  Name
  2. Motley Crue - Looks That Kill
  3. Ozzy Osbourne - Bark At The Moon
  4. Skid Row - Youth Gone Wild
  5. Twisted Sister - I Wanna Rock
  6. Warlock - All We Are

The Mini-Vid Task Explained
